Road Trippin'

"The journey, not the arrival, matters." --T. S. Eliot

Please, Eliot. Don't patronize. Obviously he never drove across the continental United States. He spent too much time being an ex-pat.

When I was little my family drove from New Jersey to Washington. Between my sophomore and junior  years of college I helped my mom drive from Ohio to Utah. But this time was my first west to east road trip.

After graduation Will, my family, and I had a plan: drive to South Dakota and see Mt. Rushmore. drive to Wisconsin. Will and I drive to Virginia. A simple, three days on the road. And fate said "no way, sucka!"

The first day went fine but Will woke up in South Dakota doubled over with pain. It fell to me to drive the jeep with the trailer attached to the back through South Dakota (it was probably a hustling, bustling metropolis but it felt like the middle of nowhere) to an InstaCare. We spent most of the day solving medical problems and when we finally got back on the road, we only made it to Minnesota.

The next day we drove from Minnesota to Wisconsin and spent about a day and a half with my family. We made it to Virginia in a day, unloaded our trailer and moved into an attic that is a bedroom (closet) and a bathroom. And we get to move again in a few weeks. Oh yeah!

This is as close as we got, on the way to InstaCare

Yeah. Not that close at all. But, hey, it's a historical landmark!!

Actually, at the end of it all--I'm just glad we made it. And I did love seeing Mt. Rushmore as much as I could. This country's pretty spectacular.

Oh, and we're gonna do it all again in August. Yay...
