Summer Sweetie

For just a minute, let's be in denial about what day it is and rewind to a month ago...

Loves: Camden is finally on the move and loving it!! (physical therapy for the win!) After a few times of stretching so far she ended up rolling tummy to back on accident, she finally got the hang of army crawling. Now nothing, nowhere, and nobody is safe! I actually have to baby proof the house now, which is a totally foreign experience. But I'm not complaining.

Cocoa Beach, Florida
I don't want to touch the water...Just let me eat the sand.
Will does NOT like the beach, and he has passed this feeling to his children. Maybe someday we'll spend a nice afternoon building sandcastles and splashing in the waves, but not this vacation...
While we were visiting with grandparents and great-grandparents in Florida she would almost inchworm to try and get places, but it was a real struggle. Our final stop before returning home from vacation was a visit with family in North Carolina and she started to army crawl. When your cousin is holding a toy that you want, you have to make every effort to get there!

Hates: How can you hate anything when you can move across the room? Especially when your brother drops granola bar crumbs almost everywhere he goes. Heaven.

My champion road tripper!
His sister needs a constant flow of cheerios and ritz crackers to keep her happy.

New Tricks: Camden learned how to point this month. Her great-grandpa, Yes Yes, also taught her how to wave and to clap while we were in Florida. She's such a talented young lady.

Fourth of July Sparklers

Our little lady is rolling all over the place. She chews her toes and is rarely seen without two fingers in her mouth. When she is put on hands and knees she even rocks back and forth--we are sooooooo close to crawling!

100+ degree heat emanating off the tennis court surface?
That's where my kids want to hang out every day. Will passed that on to them to, and I love it.

Second First Birthday

A few days after Witten turned one, he and I headed to Wisconsin to spend time with my side of the family.

My first birthday cake growing up was Big Bird, so I requested a similar one for Witten. His eyes are special...
Frosting is much better indoors.
Rocking a Birthday Present

Hyrum's birthday is a week after Witten's and Holli made him this beautiful (and frightening) cake

One day we went to a farm and Witten thought the "sand" (corn) box was his personal snack

The way to Witten's heart? Read him a book!

Mirrors and the Midwest

In the continuing saga of trying to remember all of Witten's milestones from a summer on the road...we arrive at 8 months.

Loves: looking at himself in the mirror and looking at photos and videos of himself. He is into waving at people with his whole arm and loves to wave both of his arms very energetically whenever he's excited (i.e. when his dad enters the room after being gone for any period of time).

There is also nothing better than shaking a toy as emphatically as possible. Luckily his grip strength is excellent these days and he has also refined the skill of passing a toy back and forth between hands.

The little stinker has also learned how to send a message. We were hanging with our buddy Matt and Witten was sitting on Will's lap with a very straight face whenever he was looking at Matt. He would turn to smile at Will then go back to staring at Matt. Eventually he warmed up, but he was serious for a long while.

Hates: the bane that is tummy time. He is willing to occasionally rotate towards a toy while on his stomach but most often he just lays his head down and cries (I feel like a broken record...but I love it when babies crawl and I guess I am still in denial that he is going to skip this step)

New Tricks: Witten is our little assisted-walker. He is still getting his feet under him, but most of the time he gets where he wants to go (even if that is walking from one side of the living room to the other and back again).

He also does pretty well sitting unassisted. Occasionally he will lunge for a toy and gets a bit off balance, crashing onto his face or the back of his head. Don't worry, I surround him with pillows. But it's still a traumatic experience.

He is finally eating like a champ! If we're being totally honest with ourselves, he still does his fair share of gagging and puking at meal times, but he also doesn't cry as much and there is more swallowing involved. Witten is also super into spoons. He grabs the spoon to bang food on the tray, to use it as the vehicle to get food in his hair, and occasionally to put food in his mouth.

All in all, Witten is my sweet boy who just makes my heart melt. He gives neck hugs and smiles when Will or I enter the room, and he therefore basically has me wrapped around his little finger.

Also, this video of him in a swing. Oh man.

Most of June was spent in Wisconsin visiting my family. Witten was spoiled by grandparents, and his aunt and uncles. We also spent time in Iowa visiting Uncle Nick and Aunt Sara and Witten got to meet his cousins Tristan and Aramis for the first time. Pictures forthcoming.

Summer Sun

We had a great summer visiting family in various places around the country. We may never do it again (particularly with an eight month old) because we essentially drove half our possessions around the country in a very cramped car, but we did have some lovely adventures along the way.

Also, how is it that I got zero pictures of Witten with any of his cousins? Slacking in the photography department...
